Resources for Parents

globe-D8FB58282014 Virginia Career Education Foundation Scholarship Application Download the 2014 VCEF Scholarship Application – available to members of CTE student organizations who plan to continue career training after high school in the CTE program begun in high school. DUE DATE: January 17, 2014. Eight scholarships are available each year, one for each CTE student organization.

As a parent, you need to be aware of the educational opportunities available in order to help your student gain the “know-how” he or she needs to succeed in today’s high-tech workplace.

Keep in mind:

  • Beginning with the 2013-2014 academic year, all middle schools in Virginia must develop and maintain a personal Academic and Career Plan for each seventh- grade student. The development timeline is extended throughout the student’s seventh-grade year with completion required by the fall of the eighth-grade year. Any personal academic and career plans prescribed by local school boards for students in grades 7-12 that are currently in effect would be approved to continue without further action by the Board.
  • Each student’s Academic and Career Plan must include educational goals, a program of study for high school graduation, and a post-secondary career pathway based on the student’s academic and career interests.
  • Each plan must be developed and signed by the student, the student’s parent or guardian, and school official(s) designated by the principal.

No matter what field your child hopes to enter, chances are technology will be involved in a significant way. That’s why it’s more important than ever to include CTE programs in your educational plans!

The facts:

  • A high-school diploma is the lowest common denominator for career success.
  • Some type of education beyond high school is necessary for future career success.
  • Young people today have more opportunities and more options than any generation ever before.Career Terms & Resources 2013-2014 Bookmark (2 per page) with pertinent career terms and list of resources for more information. Good quick reference for parents and students.
